Celebrating Our Volunteers: Jim Hall

It’s Volunteer Week in Canada! We want to take the opportunity to say thank you to our volunteers who make our programs and services possible. We asked Jim Hall, EAL Tutor with ISANS, what volunteering means to him.

Why do you volunteer at ISANS?

There has been a marked increase in negativity towards immigration and newcomers in much of the world – particularly refugees who have already been through enough. I want to make newcomers feel welcome and that they belong.

What’s a memorable moment you’ve had while volunteering at ISANS?

When relatively new EAL learners start to joke with you in English. It’s always quite the surprise and a sure sign of progress.

What does volunteering mean to you?

My parents immigrated to Nova Scotia in the 1970s. I grew up with different cultural values. I also lived abroad often where I had to pick up other languages and norms. As a result, I empathize with newcomers. I recognize many of the difficulties that they face and can help them to navigate some of the obstacles.

Thank you, Jim!
