Multilingual Interactive Tour Guide app launches at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21

Developed by new Canadians, for new Canadians, the Interactive Tour Guide (ITG) uses Quick Response (QR) technology to translate content in the Canadian Immigration Story exhibit into Mandarin, Arabic and MiKmaq languages. Users can now explore 10 sections of this Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 exhibit in the language of their choice using their smartphones.

ITG is a collaboration between Tidal TransCreative, and UBIELIFE IT Solutions with support from the Nova Scotia Cultural Innovation Fund. ITG’s content and language localisation were locally produced with special attention given to the how new Canadians would access the app and exhibit content.

On Friday, October 5th the Museum welcomed Stefanie Sun, of UBIELIFE IT and Daniel Baugh of Tidal Transcreative to present the app, demonstrate its features and answer questions. Local MLA’s, ISANS representatives, Museum staff and other VIPS were in attendance to support the project.

“By concurrently providing opportunities to new Canadians and strengthening the role of museums through technological innovation and community engagement, we have built a bridge that make new arrivals and visitors to our region feel even more welcome” – Daniel Baugh, Tidal Transcreative

About the Museum:

The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 collects, shares and pays tribute to the Canadian immigration story. The Museum is situated in Halifax, Nova Scotia at Pier 21, the National Historic Site that served as the gateway to Canada for one million immigrants between 1928 and 1971. Today, the Museum shares the stories and experiences of all immigrants to Canada, past to present day. The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 enhances public understanding of the experiences of immigrants to Canada, highlights the vital role immigration has played in the building of our country and the contributions of immigrants to Canada’s culture, economy and way of life.
