Online Business Development Training: Starting a Farm in Nova Scotia

This workshop is designed to provide aspiring farmers with a comprehensive guide to starting a successful farm in Nova Scotia. The session will cover the key steps and considerations necessary for establishing a farm, including choosing a farm type, finding the right land, understanding local regulations, and planning for sustainability.

Join Erin Sears, Business Development Officer, and Zoshia Fraser, Agricultural Representative with the Department of Agriculture. This workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to take the first steps toward building a successful farm in Nova Scotia.

Topics covered in the workshop will include:

  • Getting Started: Identifying your goals and selecting a farm type.
  • Land Selection: Finding and evaluating farmland in Nova Scotia.
  • Farming Practices: Sustainable agriculture, soil health, crop rotation, and livestock management.
  • Regulations and Permits: Understanding the legal requirements for farming in the region.
  • Planning for Success: Developing a business plan and establishing a budget.
  • Marketing and Selling: Exploring local markets, direct sales, and distribution channels.
  • Resources and Support: Accessing available resources, grants, and community support.

 To attend this session, you must:

  • Be an ISANS business client
  • Have a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 5+
