ISANS’ Family-Linked PSR Allocations

Through family-linked sponsorships, ISANS supports people living in Nova Scotia to sponsor family members or friends who meet the UN refugee definition for private sponsorship. Through these sponsorships, ISANS helps reunite families separated by conflict or persecution.

Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program

In our Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program, we provide information, resources, and support to groups and individuals who are interested or involved in the sponsorship of refugees, increasing settlement capacity and awareness in the community.

Sponsor a Refugee

Sponsoring a refugee family is a concrete way to respond to a humanitarian crisis unfolding overseas.  Sponsorship is a commitment of two or more years, which includes preparing, applying, waiting, and helping the refugees to settle after arrival.

ISANS' Family-Linked PSR Allocations

Through Family-linked sponsorships, ISANS supports people living in Nova Scotia to sponsor family member(s) or a friend who meet the UN refugee definition for private sponsorship. Through these sponsorships, ISANS helps reunite families separated by conflict or persecution.

For 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has granted ISANS 106 individual spots for private refugee sponsorship. This means that we have permission to submit sponsorship applications for up to 106 individuals. ISANS has already selected the sponsorship applications for the 2023 spots, so we are not requesting or receiving new applications for 2023. In early 2024, we will receive from IRCC the number of application spots for our 2024 allocation. Please see below for information on how to apply for 2024.

Each application sent to IRCC requires one spot for each family member (including spouses and/or children still living in their country of origin). Some spots will go to dependents of previously submitted applications. So, for example, if a sponsored person gets married while waiting to come to Canada, IRCC requires that we add this spouse to the existing sponsorship application, and we will use one of the spots we received for that year.

Changes to ISANS’ Family-Linked PSR program

This fall, ISANS will accept new interest forms from the community for family-linked sponsorships. In August 2023, we will hold information sessions on the upcoming interest form and sponsorship application process. There will be two changes to the application process that we are introducing as of January 1, 2024:

  • Co-sponsors can sponsor up to 10 family members (this has increased from the previous maximum of 4 family members)
  • ISANS will require 100% of funds needed for the sponsorships of refugees to be put in trust with ISANS. These funds will be deposited in a phased approach:
    • 20% at the ISANS intake process
    • 30% at the time of ISANS’ application submission to IRCC
    • 50% after IRCC’ sponsorship application approval. Co-sponsors will have until the notification of refugee’s arrival to provide these funds.

Once the refugee arrives in Canada, ISANS will use these funds to provide monthly allowances to the sponsored refugee.
