Lydia Park: finding purpose in service

Eunben Lydia Park’s journey in Canada began in 2014 when she arrived in Regina as an exchange student, stepping into a world that was both exciting and challenging.

“I was the only East Asian student in my high school; I quickly learned the value of community and support,” shares Lydia. “The cold weather was very opposite to my home, but it was the warmth of human connection that truly made a difference.”

In 2018, Lydia moved to Halifax to pursue her university education. It was here that she first learned about ISANS through friends, and her desire to give back to the community took root. Since 2023, Lydia has been volunteering with ISANS, supporting newcomers and immigrants by drawing on her own experiences as someone who once needed guidance.

“During my time in Regina, I volunteered with the Inner-City Mission, where I had the privilege of working with young First Nations children facing difficult circumstances. Together, we organized fun activities and prepared nutritious meals, creating a safe space for them to thrive,” recalls Lydia. “This experience made my passion stronger to help others and helped me to understand the challenges faced by newcomers.”

At ISANS, Lydia serves as a recreational navigator, assisting a Ukrainian mother and her three children in accessing recreational activities.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is I provide with information about various programs available in the Halifax Regional Municipality to one of Ukrainian mother. Witnessing the joy and gratitude of this family has been incredibly fulfilling,” Lydia shares her joyful experience. “The mother often expresses her appreciation by holding my hands and saying, “thank you,” which fills my heart with happiness.”

Volunteering has not only enriched Lydia’s personal life but also enhanced her professional journey. Now working for Halifax Regional Municipality, she is proud to be part of an organization that values diversity and inclusivity.

“My experiences have allowed me to connect with various communities and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures,” she says.

For Lydia, the joy of helping others is immeasurable. Her story demonstrates how empathy, service, and community-building can transform lives—both for those who give and those who receive.

“Ultimately, the joy of helping others is untold. Knowing that I can make a positive impact on the lives of those in need is what drives me to continue this important work,” she reflects.
