Accessibility in action: Radiya Hasoun breaking barriers
Radiya Hasoun’s journey from Syria to Canada in 2020 is a powerful example of resilience, hope, and the strength found in family and community support. Arriving with her mother and three siblings, Radiya faced the challenges of adapting to a new country and culture, all while navigating complete vision loss. Radiya has not only overcome barriers but has flourished in her new home.
Radiya has learned Braille since coming to Canada and embraces every opportunity to learn and grow. She credits her family for their unwavering support.

“I perform my daily tasks with the help of my family; they are very supportive and kind towards me,” she shares. “I am so happy with my life. My mother pampers me a lot and always stands by my side.”
Her commitment to education is equally encouraging. In 2024, Radiya completed Canadian Language Benchmark Level 6 at ISANS, marking the minimum threshold needed to enroll in higher education. Looking ahead, she is preparing to enroll in a healthcare diploma program at Nova Scotia Community College, taking another bold step toward her dreams.
Despite the challenges she faces, including missing her family and friends who remain in Syria, Radiya maintains a positive outlook.
“I will always enjoy life as it is. We can’t change anything, but it’s always good to be blessed for the life you have,” she expresses. “Do whatever you like.”
Radiya’s success was supported by the Accessibility Support Program (ASP) within Language Services at ISANS. The program provides a comprehensive, three-tiered approach to helping clients with various challenges, including sight or hearing impairments, mobility issues, learning disabilities, medical needs, or mild cognitive difficulties. ASP has already supported over 150 clients, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to fully engage in language learning and beyond.
Radiya finds joy in listening to online content, especially novels, and has a passion for learning new languages. Her advice to others is both empowering and uplifting.
“Rely on yourself. Don’t let people tell you that you can’t do something that you know you can,” she shares.
Radiya Hasoun’s story is a celebration of perseverance, optimism, and the transformative power of accessible education and community support. With her family by her side and the resources available to her, Radiya is well on her way to achieving her dreams and making a positive impact in her community. Her journey inspires others to believe in themselves and underscores the importance of creating inclusive environments where everyone can belong and grow.
