Faiq Momand embraces Canada’s humanitarian support for refugees

Faiq Momand’s journey to Canada is a powerful testimony to the country’s commitment to humanitarian support and the resilience of newcomers. Arriving from Kabul, Afghanistan, in December 2024 with his seven children, Faiq faced immense challenges after the Taliban’s rise to power forced him to leave his career as a journalist.

“I have worked as news presenter for 9 years in Afghanistan,” Faiq recalls. “I started voice over peace messaging for 15-30 seconds on radio after not getting work on TV channels.”

Upon arrival, Faiq and his family were welcomed by ISANS, where they received essential resettlement services, ranging from orientation, housing support, and basic needs to language skill development and parental guidance, to help them adapt to life in Nova Scotia.

“Even though Faiq has a large family of nine, and it was challenging to secure suitable housing, we were eventually able to find them a brand-new four-bedroom home,” shares Hadayat Rahimi, Resettlement Assistance Program coordinator at ISANS. “I found Faiq to be a resilient and kind person-someone who remained calm, respectful, and positive despite the challenges of resettlement.”

Faiq expresses gratitude for the caring support he received.

“We were so tired and couldn’t sleep for 48 hours,” Faiq shares. “ISANS driver took us to the hotel safely. Hadayat Rahimi was so kind to arrange food for us.”

His children have quickly adapted to the Canadian school system, and the family has found a warm welcome in their new community.

“The local community has been welcoming and treated us with dignity regardless of our status as newcomers or language barriers,” says Faiq.

Looking ahead, Faiq expressed a strong desire to contribute to Canadian society.

“I wish to work for Canada and help treat people; I can do a lot within my capacity,” expresses Faiq. “I will be loyal to the Canadian Government; they supported us and accepted us in their country. My future generation has a secure future here.”

With Canada Day approaching, Faiq’s story is a reminder to celebrate Canada’s history and achievements while honouring the diverse contributions of newcomers and refugees, who arrive with dreams of peace and a desire to build a better future. Their courage and hope exemplify Canada’s values of love and acceptance, making this day a proud celebration of unity, resilience, and shared progress.

Faiq’s journey highlights the transformative power of compassion, community, and the opportunities that come with a fresh start.
