Yanni Shen nurturing a career for young children
Yanni Shen, originally from Shanghai, China, is a dedicated mother of two and a passionate kindergarten teacher with over 13 years of experience in the field. Since moving to Halifax, she has been working thoroughly to rebuild her career in Canada. In 2022, Yanni secured her first Canadian job as a substitute Early Childhood Education (ECE) at an elementary school. Determined to improve her English skills, she flourished thanks to the patient guidance of her ISANS teachers, Laura Maskell and Art Ross
With teachers’ support, Yanni advanced from CLB Level 4 to Level 5, gaining the confidence that empowered her to enroll in the Internationally Educated Early Childhood Educators (IEECE) program, a significant step forward in advancing her professional career.
“My teachers believed in me when I didn’t fully believe in myself, and that gave me the confidence to take the leap into the workforce,” shares Yanni.
In 2023, after welcoming her second child, Tiffany, Yanni paused her work and studies to focus on her family. When she reached out to ISANS for childcare support, she was grateful to receive a spot at Mumford ECE Centre. This allowed her to remain connected to early childhood education and community resources.

“Tiffany loved exploring the toys, and every time I picked her up, she had a big smile on her face,” Yanni recalls. “She drew her first picture, tasted her first apple sauce, and even said “bye-bye” for the very first time there.”
About two months later, Yanni noticed a job posting on ISANS website and applied immediately. Drawing on her extensive experience, she had successfully secured the position. Transitioning from client to staff member, she describes this opportunity as a dream come true.
“I was so grateful to all the teachers who cared for her (my daughter), especially Ms. Sayaka in the infant room,” shares Yanni. “It was during those moments that I thought to myself how amazing it would be to work in a place like this.”
Now working at ISANS’s ECE centre, Yanni feels incredibly supported every day. Her resilience and dedication shine through as she continues to grow both personally and professionally within her new community, which she now calls home.
“My supervisor and colleagues are always there for me,” says Yanni. “As a newcomer, I still have many questions, but they always say: ‘Don’t worry—ask anything, anytime’.”
Having been in her role for five months, Yanni finds joy and fulfillment in her work. Inspired by her own journey and the support she received, she is passionate about giving back by helping other newcomers succeed and grow. Her dedication reflects her desire to make a positive impact and foster a welcoming, supportive community where everyone can achieve their goals.
