From New Beginnings to New Purpose: Emma’s Story of Growth
Emma Ibraheem, a privately sponsored refugee from Syria, arrived in Nova Scotia in July 2025 with a strong determination to rebuild her life and pursue new career opportunities. While her academic background was in Sociology, she chose to transition into the healthcare sector recognizing both the demand and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
“Since moving to Nova Scotia, I have experienced many challenges and opportunities while adapting to a new country, culture, and language. This journey has helped me grow both personally and professionally,” she shares.
Shortly after her arrival, Emma enrolled in the Long-Term Care Assistant/Disability Support Worker (LTCA/DSW) program at ISANS, where she gained essential pre-employment training, including communication skills, employment counselling, and job readiness support. Inspired by this experience, she pursued further education and was accepted into the Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) certificate program at Oxford International College in Halifax, beginning in January 2026.
“Through the LTCA program, I gained valuable knowledge about long-term care and developed a strong interest in healthcare,” she mentions. “ISANS also encouraged me to volunteer in long-term care, where I gained practical hands-on experience and built confidence working with residents and staff.”
Alongside her studies, Emma volunteered with Shannex starting in September 2025, gaining valuable hands-on experience that led to her employment as a Care Assistant in February 2026. Through continued participation in ISANS programs, including orientation, computer classes, and workplace language training, Emma strengthened her confidence, skills, and ability to succeed in her new environment.
“I am truly grateful for the many opportunities, programs, and support that ISANS has provided throughout my journey,” says Emma. “Their guidance has helped me gain confidence, continue my education, and build a meaningful career path in healthcare.”
Emma’s journey highlights how a holistic approach, combining training, volunteering, and strong community support can empower newcomers to achieve meaningful employment. Her progress not only enhances her own career prospects but also contributes to addressing labour needs in Nova Scotia’s healthcare sector. Her story is a powerful example of how, through collaboration, opportunity, and support, together we grow.
