Building Connections, Creating Community: Taiwo’s Canada Connects Journey

Starting over in a new country comes with many opportunities, but it can also bring challenges. For many newcomers, building a social network, understanding community life, and navigating the job market can feel overwhelming. Through ISANS’ Canada Connects program, newcomers are matched with local volunteers who help them build meaningful connections, learn about their communities, and feel more at home in Nova Scotia.

For Taiwo, participating in ISANS Canada Connects provided exactly that kind of support. After being matched with volunteer Elvis, the two began meeting regularly to explore Halifax, attend community events, and share conversations about life, work, and settling in Canada.

Over time, those meetings became much more than casual outings. Through their connection, Taiwo gained valuable insights into Canadian workplace culture, networking, and employment opportunities. Elvis shared job leads, offered guidance, and helped Taiwo better understand how to build professional and social relationships in his new home.

“The most valuable part of my experience has been having someone like Elvis who has been very supportive, friendly, and willing to guide me as I settle into life in Canada,” says Taiwo. “Our conversations have been helpful, especially around job searching, employment opportunities, and understanding the community better.”

Through the program, Taiwo also became more involved in the community. Together, he and Elvis attended local events, explored different parts of the city, and connected with new people. These experiences helped Taiwo feel more comfortable and confident as he established his life in Nova Scotia. As he explains, “Having someone to talk to, ask questions, and explore the community with has made settling into a new environment much easier and more enjoyable.”

For Elvis, who is also an immigrant, volunteering has been equally rewarding. “Canada Connect program is an opportunity for both the newcomers and the volunteers to learn from each other’s stories and enjoy the beauty of the land and people of Nova Scotia,” he says. “I have enjoyed experiencing new places in Nova Scotia and being part of Taiwo’s journey as he integrates into the community.”

Taiwo and Elvis’s experience reflects the heart of Canada Connects: creating relationships, fostering belonging, and helping newcomers build the confidence, connections, and knowledge they need to thrive in Nova Scotia. Through simple acts of friendship and support, lasting community connections are created, benefiting both newcomers and volunteers alike.
