About the Program
Community Building through Gardening
The Growing Strong Neighbourhoods Project has four gardens:
- Glen Garden - located on Glenforest Drive
- Multicultural Garden - located on Ashburn Avenue (off Bayers Road)
- Killam Garden - built by Killam Properties on Plateau Crescent
- Mosaic Garden - located on Willet Street (near Mosaic Church)
Who can apply?
Anyone who lives in the Clayton Park, Fairview or Mumford area can apply. Although the gardens are very popular amongst newcomer families, gardens also are held each year for long-term residents in the neighbourhoods where the gardens are located. The goal is for the gardens to become a place where people can not only grow healthy, fresh vegetables to feed their families, but also a place where newcomers and long-term residents can interact, learn from each other, and feel less like strangers.

As a gardener in the Growing Strong Neighbourhood program, you will:
- Share a garden bed with another family. Each plot is approx 4 feet by 6 feet. Plots are open to everyone in the neighbourhood. Priority is given to gardeners from the previous year and there is often a waiting list, but plots usually become available each year.
- Plant within 3 weeks of being assigned your plot and take care of it during the growing season. Along with other gardeners, commit to taking care of the compost and garbage, and to keeping the common areas of the garden neat.
- Learn new things about gardening, food preservation, composting, and maybe practice a new language!
- Meet other gardeners, immigrants, families, and community members through workshops, events, and garden parties
