Crafting a new home: How Aalaa ‘built’ his dream

Aalaa Khalifa’s journey from a newcomer to a successful carpenter in Canada is a testament to the power of determination and community support.

When he arrived three years ago, Aalaa brought with him a wealth of experience – 14 years as a skilled carpenter. However, he also faced significant challenges, particularly with language and understanding the unfamiliar local market conditions.

“When I first came to Canada, I couldn’t speak English fluently, and I couldn’t work in my field because of the language challenges,” Aalaa recalls. “I felt lost and unsure of how to start.”

Despite these barriers, Aalaa’s passion for his craft and willingness to seek help led him to ISANS, where he received the guidance and resources he needed to thrive in Nova Scotia.

“Their (ISANS) support was invaluable,” he says. “They provided translation services when needed and ensured I could understand and navigate everything better. Now, I speak English confidently—far better than when I first arrived.”

Beyond language training, ISANS connected Aalaa with the Work-based Trades Practical Assessment Program, a partnership with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency. This program gave Aalaa the chance to showcase his skills and find his footing in the Nova Scotia construction sector.

Today, Aalaa is doing what he loves – working as a carpenter in Dora Construction. His hard work has earned him recognition among colleagues and in the industry. He’s even on the path to becoming a Red Seal-certified carpenter, a prestigious qualification in Canada that sets a national standard for trades to ensure consistent quality.

“Thanks to ISANS’ support, I’m now working in a company and doing what I love,” Aalaa shares with pride.

Aalaa’s story is more than just personal success – it shows how newcomers enrich their communities when given the right support. His skills and dedication are helping to build Nova Scotia, both literally and figuratively.

“Things are going really well, and I’m grateful for the guidance that got me here (Dora Construction).”

His journey proves that with resilience, dedication, and the correct helping hand, newcomers can not only realize their own dreams but also contribute significantly to building a stronger Nova Scotia for all.
