From newcomer to mentor: Gabriela’s journey of belonging at ISANS
When Gabriela arrived in Nova Scotia from Brazil, she was filled with excitement and a little uncertainty. She had left behind family, friends, and a familiar life to start anew in Canada. Like many newcomers, she was eager to contribute and build her career but wasn’t sure how to begin.
That’s when Gabriela connected with the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS). Through ISANS programs, she learned how to navigate the local job market, strengthen her professional skills, and connect with others who shared similar experiences.
“ISANS helped me feel supported and confident,” Gabriela recalls. “They didn’t just provide resources they helped me feel part of a community.”

Today, Gabriela has come full circle. She’s now part of the ISANS team, helping other newcomers find their footing and build new lives in Nova Scotia. “Because I was once in their shoes, I understand the challenges our clients face,” she says. “That’s what motivates me to give my best every day.”
As a proud Brazilian, Gabriela says her heritage plays a big role in her outlook on life. “Our culture is full of warmth, joy, and resistance. Those qualities helped me adapt to life in Canada and connect with people from all backgrounds.” She believes that Latin American Heritage Month is not just about celebration but about sharing stories that highlight strength and unity.
For Gabriela, one of the most rewarding parts of her role at ISANS is seeing clients grow in confidence. “Many come to us unsure about their next steps. By the end of the program, they feel empowered and proud of what they’ve accomplished. It’s incredible to witness that transformation.”
Her message to other immigrant women is simple yet powerful: “Believe in yourself and take one step at a time. Every small success whether it’s improving your English, attending an interview, or making a new friend is worth celebrating. You’re stronger than you think.”
Looking back, Gabriela feels proud of her journey from newcomer to mentor. “I’m grateful for how far I’ve come and for being able to help others do the same. ISANS gave me the tools to succeed, and now I get to pass that forward.”
Her story is a testament to resilience, community, and the power of helping others find their place in a new home.
