Guided to success: how mentorship shaped Imane’s career journey

Imane bey Zekkoub’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of timely mentorship, tailored resources, and a strong support network throughout the newcomer journey.

Arriving from Algeria to Nova Scotia, Imane brought more than nine years of procurement experience in the Oil & Gas sector. Referred to ISANS while still overseas, she joined the Professional Mentorship Program (PMP) with the goal of transitioning her expertise into a new industry in Canada.

“There were moments when I questioned my decisions but with the right guidance, support, and a clear plan, I was able to get back on track,” Imane shares. “This journey taught me resilience and the importance of trusting the process.”

Soon after arriving, life became busy. Imane needed to secure childcare for her infant while also supporting her husband’s professional integration with Nova Scotia Power. Bilingual in French and English, with Arabic and Tamazight as her mother tongues, she accepted a temporary role as a French teacher. Although this position allowed her to use her language skills, it did not align with her long-term career path in procurement.

With encouragement from the ISANS team and her mentor, Imane eventually re-centered her career goals—just as interviews for procurement roles began to surface. A mock interview session and renewed mentorship played a key role in rebuilding her confidence and sharpening her readiness. After reconnecting with Cindy O’Driscoll, her original mentor, Imane felt fully supported as she prepared for interviews for Procurement Specialist positions.

“I truly believe this success wouldn’t have been possible without your support. Thank you so much for organizing the mock interview with my mentor,” Imane says. “Your guidance and encouragement were invaluable and gave me the confidence I needed to perform well.”

Today, Imane is proudly employed as a Procurement Specialist. “Thanks to God, I feel much more confident in my career journey. I’m working with a wonderful team, and this experience has been both fulfilling and motivating,” she expresses.

Imane’s story reflects what is possible when timely mentorship, flexibility, and newcomer-focused support come together. Her journey shows how mentorship, even when paused, can continue to have a meaningful and lasting impact—meeting clients where they are and walking with them toward where they want to go.
