Igniting volunteerism by empowering new beginnings

Tuma Khalifa began volunteering with ISANS during the summer of 2023 as a way to give back to the organization and community that supported her successful integration into Canadian society.

As a recreational navigator, she drew from her own experience of adapting to a new culture, unfamiliar systems, and language barriers. Understanding how overwhelming those first steps can feel allowed her to approach her role with empathy and effectiveness.

“This experience enabled me to approach my role as a recreational navigator in a meaningful and effective way,” says Tuma.

In her role, Tuma assisted migrant individuals and families in accessing recreational activities, funding programs, and community events that aligned with their interests.

“I had a lot of fun doing it and gained valuable experience,” she mentions. “I found joy not only in the interactions but also in knowing that I was helping ease someone else’s transition, just as others once did for me.”

Helping people connect with opportunities that support their social and overall well-being gave her a strong sense of purpose and accomplishment. She is proud to be part of an organization that is committed to empowering migrants through a client-centred approach, fostering successful integration into Canadian society.

“I am constantly inspired by everyone I meet at ISANS, especially through their guidance and welcoming attitude,” Tuma shares gratitude.

During National Volunteer Week 2026, under the theme “Ignite Volunteerism,” we see that spirit come to life every day at ISANS. Our volunteers are the spark that ignites connection, fosters belonging, and creates opportunities for the communities we serve.
