ISANS ‘Bridge to Construction’ expands opportunities for newcomers in Nova Scotia’s growing construction workforce

June 3, 2025 (KJIPUKTUK/ Halifax) – Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) is pleased to announce the launch of two additional training cohorts for its Bridge to Construction (BTC) program, a hands-on employment initiative designed to support newcomers build careers in Nova Scotia’s growing construction industry.
Funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration’s One Journey Initiative, with additional support from RBC Foundation, the BTC program is open to permanent residents and refugees with a CLB 4+ English level who are committed to building a career and working in the construction sector.
“Nova Scotia needs more skilled trades professionals to support our growing economy and build the homes, schools, and hospitals we need,” said Nolan Young, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration. “Through partnerships like this, we’re helping more newcomers build their futures here by training for in-demand jobs and connecting them to good careers in construction.”
BTC participants receive practical, sector-specific training, essential safety certifications (including First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Fall Protection), toolboxes, and safety gear. The program includes training allowance and job placements with local employers, ensuring a smooth transition from training to employment.

“Bridge to Construction is a practical solution to two critical needs: connecting newcomers to high-demand career opportunities and supporting Nova Scotia’s growing construction industry,” said Paula Knight, CEO of ISANS. “This program plays a vital role in addressing this labour gap by equipping newcomers with the skills and connections needed to succeed, creating meaningful outcomes for both the community and the province’s economy.”
Delivered in partnership with Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), this nine-week, full-time program offers hands-on training in high-demand trades such as carpentry, drywall finishing and painting, flooring, and concrete formwork. During the final week, participants take part in site visits hosted by NSCC, providing valuable exposure to real-world construction environments.
Employers, including Dexter Construction, OMEGA, Formwork, REWS, Proactive Construction Solutions, and FH Development, support the program by offering job placements and mentorship.
The first cohort, with 20 participants, started on June 2 and runs until July 18 at NSCC IT Campus. Registration for the second cohort is open until June 8, 2025, and training is scheduled from June 30 to August 15.
