David Asare’s success as automotive service technician in Canning
An ISANS Impact Story
David Asare arrived in Canada in March 2024; he brought with him 16 years of skilled experience as an automotive service technician from Ghana and a strong determination to continue his career in a new country.
Eager to build a future for himself and his family, David participated in the ISANS Work-based Trades Practical Assessment (WTPA) program to guide his job search and transition into the Canadian workforce in his field.
“The WTPA program helped me start my career as a mechanic in Nova Scotia, where I could apply the skills and experience, I earned back home,” David reflects.
While he initially hoped to find opportunities in Halifax, David’s openness to exploring positions across Nova Scotia demonstrated his flexibility and commitment to building a new life.
In August, David was connected with Coffill’s Auto Repair in Canning, a small village in northeastern Kings County. The business owners, Josephine and Albert Coffill immediately recognized the value of David’s extensive experience.
“We have hosted two clients through the WTPA program over the last few years,” they explain. “It has been very difficult to find qualified automotive service technicians. Both technicians had the foreign car experience needed for our small business to continue to serve our customers. We look forward to continuing to work with ISANS.”
After a successful interview, David accepted the position and relocated to Canning, marking a pivotal step in gaining Canadian work experience and advancing his career. Recognizing the challenges of settling in a rural community, David received additional support, including assistance from his employer in securing affordable local housing. This crucial support allowed him to focus on his new role and adapt smoothly to his new environment.

“ISANS supported me every step of the way, from connecting me with an employer to providing safety shoes, tools, and everything I needed to begin working,” David explains. “I am deeply grateful for the support that helped me settle in and provide for my family.”
David’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and the impact of community support. Having successfully completed his practical assessment; he now works as a level 1 apprentice and is preparing for his level 1 certification exam. While he is still working toward the Red Seal certification, David is earning fair wages that respect his prior experience and education.
His story not only highlights his personal and professional growth but also stands as an inspiring testament to what is possible when determination meets opportunity. David’s success paves the way for other newcomers striving to build fulfilling careers and contribute meaningfully to Nova Scotia’s workforce.
