Dmytro’s success: Learning, adapting, growing

An ISANS Impact Story

When Dmytro Kantsurov, a seasoned dentist with 11 years of experience in Ukraine, arrived in Nova Scotia with his family in October 2023, he was eager for a new beginning. However, he quickly realized that starting over in a new country comes with its own set of challenges.

“We knew that the Canadian government had created the Canada–Ukraine authorization for emergency travel program for Ukrainian families, which made it possible to obtain a Canadian visa and a work permit for three years using a simplified system,” Dmytro explains. “Upon arrival, we faced many problems, including language barrier, finding housing, opening a bank account, finding a job, getting our child to school and many more.”

Through friends, Dmytro connected with ISANS, seeking support for employment, language improvement, and overall settlement needs. He found ISANS’ resources invaluable for learning about essential topics such as medicine and education, which played a key role in his adaptation to life in Nova Scotia.

“I wanted to improve my English skills,” he shares. “Many years ago, I learned English at school, but over time, I had forgotten much of the grammar and had not built a strong vocabulary.”

One of the most significant difficulties for Dmytro was understanding Canada’s banking system, a crucial step for newcomers, as opening a bank account is often one of the first tasks after arrival.

“In Ukraine, we have a very similar banking system, but online banking is more functional and there are no banking fees,” Dmytro notes. “For example, you can set up online banking and pay utility bills from bankApp faster than in Canada. But the credit system in Canada is much better developed, and the interest rate is low compared to Ukraine.”

However, understanding the differences in account types, fees, unfamiliar terms and services can be overwhelming for newcomers and opening a bank account in Canada is a key milestone.

“I opened a bank account in one of the popular Canadian banks. There were high fees, but I did not realize it,” Dmytro says. “After studying in ISANS topic about Canadian banking system and its structure, I learned how to send e-transfers or how to use ATM machine. Now I feel more confident to communicate with bank teller.”

Dmytro’s story proves the power of practical support and community connection. With ISANS’ guidance, he overcame barriers, mastered new systems, and took charge of his family’s financial future.

“Learning about the banking system was an essential step for effective financial management and successful integration into Canadian life, fostering a stronger sense of belonging,” Dmytro shares.

His journey highlights how ISANS’ holistic language and settlement support approach goes beyond classroom learning. By providing practical skills and guidance, ISANS empowers newcomers like Dmytro to overcome challenges, adapt, and build a secure, confident life in Nova Scotia.
