Preparing for new life in NS: The Flemix family’s story
An ISANS Impact Story
Leon Flemix, his wife Mickey, and their three sons- Luchian, Arthur, and Christiaan- left South Africa with the hope of building a brighter future in Nova Scotia. For the Flemix family, this was their first time travelling abroad, and while a strong dream of starting a new life, the realities of immigration quickly became apparent.
“None of us had ever travelled before, and while we had a strong dream of starting a new life in Canada, we were honestly unprepared for what that would mean,” Leon recalls. “We didn’t know much about the housing situation, the cold climate, winter clothing, or even how to begin looking for jobs and schools.”
Their uncertainty soon turned to hope when they learned about ISANS’ Pre-arrival programs, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The guidance and support provided by ISANS proved invaluable, helping the family transform their dream into a practical, achievable plan.
“ISANS helped turn our dream into a real, practical plan,” says Leon. “They understood what newcomers truly needed and supported us every step of the way.”
The Flemix family participated in a range of ISANS workshops and sessions, learning how to build Canadian-style resumes, craft effective cover letters, create professional LinkedIn profiles, and understand the Canadian job market. These resources equipped them with the skills and confidence they needed to succeed. They also received a personalized action plan tailored to their unique circumstances, which they described as “invaluable” and impossible to manage without ISANS’s dedicated support.
Inspired by her own positive experience, Mickey began volunteering with SOPA shortly after arriving in Canada, joining their LinkedIn Ambassador program—a networking initiative for newcomers. She shared her story with other newcomers and provided information about the services available, demonstrating her commitment to giving back and supporting others on their own integration journeys.
“Volunteering was incredibly fulfilling,” Mickey shares. “It was a way to stay connected, build new friendships, and continue learning, all while making a difference in someone else’s journey.”
Thanks to their preparation and the support received, Leon, Mickey, and their son quickly secured jobs. Their colleagues were often surprised by how smoothly they settled in, especially given how challenging the transition can be for many newcomers.
“I was able to secure a job the same week I applied, and my son found work just two weeks after arriving,” says Mickey. “That would not have been possible without the guidance and resources we received.”
Although the Flemix family initially felt nervous and overwhelmed by their new surroundings, over time, they found themselves belonging in Nova Scotia, embracing new opportunities and growing more confident in their environment.
“Don’t underestimate the power of being prepared. Immigration is more than a dream. It’s a journey that requires guidance, support, and knowledge,” reflects Leon and Mickey. “Without support, we might still be wondering what to do next, but instead, we are building a life here and feeling we belong here.”
The Flemix family’s story exemplifies the transformative impact of ISANS’ services. Through personalized assistance, practical resources, and meaningful connections, ISANS helps newcomers overcome challenges, realize their aspirations, and build a strong sense of belonging and hope for the future in Nova Scotia.
