Newcomers face dietary challenges leading to long-term health issues

Immigrants contribute significantly to Canada’s population, diversity and economy. However, recent studies reveal concerning health declines among newcomers, particularly because they are unfamiliar with the country’s dietary habits, leading to gaps in nutrition awareness.

A national survey of 300 immigrant and refugee children in Saskatchewan reveals concerning alarming trends. The study highlights that 36% of newcomer children had inadequate zinc intake, needed for growth and development, while 52% had unhealthy cholesterol levels, compared to 35% of Canadian-born children.

These findings highlight the critical issues that many newcomers often experience a decline in health after arriving in Canada. Factors contributing to this decline include a lack of awareness of the adverse effects of poor eating habits, unfamiliarity with the Canadian healthcare system, language barriers, cultural differences, financial constraints limiting access to nutritious foods, and a shift toward more processed and Western-style diets.

ISANS is actively addressing health challenges through comprehensive support programs. Our holistic approach includes assessing client’s needs, disability assessment, connecting newcomers with essential health services, and collaborating with partners to increase access to medical resources. This year, we successfully conducted more than 300 pre-arrival health assessments, 54 evaluations of people with disability, and 305 clients were referred to dental clinics.

Our programs, like the Newcomer Community Wellness Program, provide educational sessions about the Canadian healthcare system, as well as patient rights and responsibilities. Additionally, ISANS provides advocacy healthcare support to help clients overcome the barriers to settlement.

A Newcomer Wellness Trauma Stabilization Group client shared his experience, “After the war in Ukraine, there were moments when I felt disheartened and lost control over my life. I did not have the support system which I had before migrating, but I found peers here and surrounded myself with positive, encouraging individuals creating an environment where I felt safe to express my feelings and struggles. I found connections that reminded me that I was not alone on this journey. Regaining control over my life has been an empowering journey. I am coming back to my routine and found it beneficial to embrace self-care.”  By addressing newcomer’s dietary and health challenges, we can foster healthier lifestyles and enhance their overall well-being, ultimately promoting successful integration into the community and preventing potential long-term health complications.
