On Your Mark, Get Set, Let’s Giv’er! ISANS community prepares for the Blue Nose Marathon

From June 6-9, members of the ISANS community will volunteer at and run in this year’s Blue Nose Marathon presented by Scotiabank. Below are profiles of three of our runners. Be sure to cheer them on as they compete over the weekend! You can support the runners here. All funds raised go to the Refugee Emergency Fund at ISANS.

Sharaf Alrashed was born to run.

“I love to run” states Sharaf “It gives me lots of energy and strong muscles.”

Sharaf is one of a number of community members and ISANS staff running to build a community where all can belong and grow as part of Team ISANS at the Bluenose Marathon.

This is not the first time that he will run in the Bluenose Marathon. This year, he will be competing in both the 5KM and 10KM. And will be doing both of these races days after he finishes fasting for Ramadan. Sharif will draw on his love of running as he chasing the finish line on race day.

Tariku Tassema Tasew is driven by a lifetime love of running.

“I love to run, being athletic and training,” say Tariku, whose love of running was planted in childhood, where he would use running as a way to stay active.

Tariku is one of a number of community members and ISANS staff running to build a community where all can belong and grow as part of Team ISANS at the Bluenose Marathon.

He will be competing in both the 5km and Half Marathon on Race Weekend. He is excited to be running with Team ISANS, recognizing the importance of ISANS for immigrants.

“Running for ISANS is my happiness”

Katheer Alkhalaf loves to stay active.

“I love to run in races,” says Katheer, through a translator. “I like how many people are involved.”

Katheer is one of a number of community members and ISANS staff running to build a community where all can belong and grow as part of Team ISANS at the Bluenose Marathon.

Not only will Katheer run the 5km race in the Blue Nose Marathon, he will also volunteer at ISANS water station. “I love to participate with ISANS any way I can,” he says.

Katheer hasn’t had the energy to train for this year’s race as he is currently observing Ramadan, but he isn’t worried. His passion for running will carry him to the finish line.
