Meet the Pride 2023 Artist in Residence

We are excited to announce our Pride 🌈 Artist in Residence Excel Garay. Excel has been working on a large-scale painting for ISANS Mumford office. You can view the painting towards the end of August or the beginning of September once it is finished. Read the bio below and stay tuned for updates! 🖼

A portrait of Excel Garay, an artist. She has black hair wearing black clothe looking towards the camera while standing sideways.

Excel Garay is an artist-curator and community worker operating on Mi'kma'ki in K’jipuktuk (Halifax, Nova Scotia). Her work, in these intersecting roles, is informed by mutual desires discovered through acts of collaboration and her lived experience as a trans-Filipina-diasporic-settler. She graduated with distinction from NSCAD University with a double Bachelor's degree in Art History and Fine Arts (2022). She is co-Director of the Khyber Centre for The Arts. Her artistic and academic lenses are informed by hauntology, which allows her to better commune with postcolonial cultural productions, trans aesthetics, apparitional aesthetics, and anti-colonial works.
