Intercultural Workplace

Presentation during the Intercultural Workplace Program

The Intercultural Workplace Program (IWP) benefits employers with our focus on intercultural competence in recruitment, retention and communication skills.  With virtual and in-person workshops and support, we help employers ensure that employees from any national origin feel accepted for their contributions and have a workplace where they want to stay and contribute their skills and talents.

Description of volunteer roles

  • IWP Content Support:
    • Attend virtual workshops and review materials. Suggest improvements to content and delivery methods.
    • Attend occasional in-person events and provide support.
    • Create scenarios based on personal experience, which can be used to develop workshop materials
  • IWP Employer Engager: Gather data from attendee evaluations at virtual workshops and identify
    • impacts from the workshops in the workplaces of the attendees
    • which employers, sectors and industries are well represented
  • IWP Sector Researcher: Conduct desktop research to
    • identify other Canadian Settlement organizations: highlight intercultural and employer-focused services
    • identify emerging sector needs /immigration stream opportunities for IWP
    • recommend changes to data gathering techniques to benefit future research

Key Information

Time Commitment:

• 1-2 hours/ week
• 3 months or as agreed, and with option to renew

Qualification:

• Experience as an immigrant and /or with intercultural issues and circumstances
• Have an appreciation for Universal Human Rights, cultural diversity, EDIA and Anti-Racism.
• CBL 7+ and ability to express and synthesize information
• Familiarity with IT/internet and software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Flexible schedule to accommodate periodic virtual meetings between 9-5, Monday to Friday

Please note: some of the ISANS volunteer roles require an intermediate to advanced English language level. This is because the roles support:

  • newcomers with beginner English levels who wish to be matched with someone who can help them practice their English
  • newcomers with a wealth of experience who seek insight into the Canadian workplace and community culture

We do have some opportunities for beginner English language speakers as well!

Volunteers must be 18 years of age and older to volunteer. For those under 18, and enrolled in a high school co-op program, there may opportunities work placements at ISANS.
